The Croissant Sofa and Lounge Chair represent an elegant and playful take on the traditional typology of the Chesterfield sofa and club chair. GUBI has revived Illum Wikkelsø’s original 1962 design, embracing its sculptural and dramatic presence, coveted organic curves, and sublime craftsmanship.
The characteristic ‘croissant’ form – named for its playful reference to the iconic French breakfast pastry – makes a confident statement with a sense of humor in any interior space and works well as a standalone focal piece or in combination with other bold selections.
- Midcentury Danish architect and designer Illum Wikkelsø believed that furniture should be built to last, to indulge the body and to please the eye.
- Wikkelsø redefined classic pieces for more a more relaxed audience emerging in the optimism of the 1960s, with the belief that a chair was not just for sitting upright, but that it should be comfortable no matter the angle at which you sit – or even lie down.
- The Croissant Sofa and Lounge chare are distinctive pieces, with organic curves and clean lines.
- In collaboration with the Wikkelsø family, and paying close attention to the original drawings, the ergonomic lines have been refined to reflect contemporary body sizes.
- Both the lounge chair and three-seater sofa feature a base-frame and legs, made from oiled walnut or FSC-certified oak, with a slight front-to-back downward tilt and a curved detail into which slot the seat and backrest.
- The complex curves required by the playful form of the ‘croissant’ are created with meticulously hand-stitched flat-piping in the fabric editions, and leather piping in the leather versions, honoring Wikkelsø’s legacy as a trained craftsman.
- The horseshoe curve of the backrest enables multiple alternative sitting and lying positions, so each user can find their own comfort, even though both the sofa and lounge chair demand a fairly formal sitting position if the sitter’s feet are on the floor.
- The Croissant Sofa makes a powerful statement as a standalone piece, while the Croissant Lounge Chair works well alone or in pairs as ‘fireside chairs’, or in members’ clubs, workspaces or hotel lobbies.
